Hazel Scott Lapoint's Obituary
Hazel Scott LaPoint was born November 20, 1922, to Henry Scott and Georgia Owens Scott in Gueydan, LA. She was the third child in the family with thirteen siblings.
Hazel attended Gueydan Elementary School which was later rebuilt and renamed Jesse Owens Elementary in honor of her grandfather, the first black man to settle in Gueydan.
In 1940, Hazel married Irving D. LaPoint in Gueydan. Two children were born to their union, Sandra Fay and Irving Famous.
The family moved to Beaumont in 1943 when Irving began work at Magnolia Refinery (Mobil). Hazel worked several jobs before attending Lamar Tech and earning her Nurse's Aide Certification. She then worked for many years at Angie Nall's School for Special Needs Children. After it closed, Hazel worked private duty nursing until she retired.
Hazel and her family joined St. James United Methodist Church in 1943 upon arriving in Beaumont. For over seventy years, she was a faithful member there.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings; Daisy Taylor, Robert Williams, Mary Bolden, James Beloney, Ivory Beloney, Charles Beloney and Earnest Beloney.
Loved ones left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Sandra Faye LaPoint Bailey and her son, Irving Famous LaPoint (Deidra); grandchildren, Mrs. Ava Batiste (Norris), Dr. Rahn Kennedy Bailey (Theresa), Dr. Dion LaPoint Owens (Rev. Ray), and Irving Nelson LaPoint; great grandchildren, Dr.Candace Bailey Mason (Dr. Jeremy), Hazel Elizabeth Batiste, Norris Batiste III, Ebone Brianne Bailey, Rahn Mitchell Bailey, Jordan Owens and Jillian Owens; siblings, Hilda Wilson, Lesly Beloney, Cecil Beloney, Percy Beloney and Earline Mafyfield.
