Shirley Ruth Petry-Chopane, 82, daughter of the late John Petry and Dora Broussard was born September 28, 1938, in Cheeks, Texas. She was a member of the Greater Rising Sun Baptist Church since a young child. She was united in holy matrimony to Sidney Charles Chopane, Jr. in December of 1956. This union was blessed with six children.

Shirley loved to sew clothing for her family; shopping; zydeco, blues, and gospel music; and cooking southern Cajun cuisines for family.  Her most important pastime was spending quality time with her family. She believed in the African proverb that "it takes a village to raise a child", and she embodied these words as she never closed her heart or door to anyone. She left a lasting imprint on everyone's heart and mind which are filled with laughter, love, strength, and support. She was a true fighter in life and to the end when the Lord called her to glory on August 20, 2021. Shirley was loved by many and will be forgotten by none.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children: Linda Chopane, Janice Chopane, Stephanie Chopane, Embry Chopane, Curtis Chopane, and Robert Chopane (Ashley Chopane); and 23 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild.

A private service will be held for family and friends.
